GAYLE has released “bite the bullet,” a new single that pairs upbeat pop energy with the emotional fallout of a relationship ending. The song arrives as the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter builds momentum toward her debut full-length album, Observing Chaos, scheduled to drop on Sept. 18.
GAYLE said the song grew out of a period of sadness following the end of a relationship. Instead of remaining focused on the breakup, she began going out, enjoying herself and experiencing the excitement of meeting someone new. That contrast between lingering heartbreak and impulsive attraction became the song’s central idea. She described it as “an energetic pop song with punk/rock inspo that captures the feeling of meeting somebody and wanting to know everything about them! you don’t care if their past is pretty or ugly…if they have a bullet, you wanna bite it.”
The track follows “junebug!,” GAYLE’s first new music in two years, and “loving you is,” an emotional piano-driven song released during the same return to music. NME Japan reported that “Bite The Bullet” is included on Observing Chaos, which will mark GAYLE’s first studio album. Glass Factory noted the song’s repeated “nanana” hook and described its brisk, energetic sound as offering another glimpse of the range expected on the album.
Observing Chaos is positioned as a more personal chapter for the Nashville-based artist, exploring relationships, heartbreak, trust, partying and the uncertainty associated with growing from adolescence into adulthood. GAYLE, 22, rose to international prominence with the multi-platinum hit “abcdefu,” which earned her a Grammy nomination for song of the year. She has also toured with artists including Taylor Swift, P!NK, Cyndi Lauper, Tate McRae, AJR and My Chemical Romance.
GAYLE has also been previewing the forthcoming album through fan-focused events, including listening sessions in Nashville and Atlanta, following the launch of her fan club, the g spot. With “bite the bullet,” she continues a new era that combines the emotional candor of her songwriting with a more carefree, energetic sound.
