Charli XCX has officially returned with her latest single, “Rock Music,” created alongside longtime collaborators A.G. Cook and Finn Keane. The song arrives with a black-and-white video directed by Aidan Zamiri that follows Charli through city streets as she parties and smokes beside towering piles of cigarettes.

Charli’s new single follows renewed attention surrounding her upcoming eighth studio album, the follow-up to 2024’s Brat. Speaking with British Vogue, Charli explained that she wants to push her own interpretation of rock while avoiding clichés. “For me, it’s fun to flip the form,” she said, adding that repeating another dance-heavy record would have felt creatively limiting.

The release of ‘Rock Music’ came shortly after The Dare premiered the song during his opening set for PinkPantheress in Brooklyn. However despite the title of the track, Charli made it clear that her upcoming album is not a full rock album. Sharing studio footage from Paris’ Rue Boyer Studios on Instagram, she wrote, “”a video of me making a song called “rock music” that is not actually rock music which is funny because i never said i was making a rock album. love you xx””

Rock Music” also continues a busy stretch for the artist. Earlier this year, she released Wuthering Heights, featuring original songs tied to ‘Wuthering Heights’ starring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie. She also contributed to the film ‘Mother Mary’ alongside FKA Twigs and Jack Antonoff.

This summer, Charli is set to headline major festivals including Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Reading and Leeds Festivals, and Austin City Limits alongside Lorde and Twenty One Pilots.
